Too early for Spring fever? Nonsense! My Spring Fever starts about as soon as the leaves start turning all of Creator’s ‘earth-tones’ in the Fall. There’s not much else I love to do more than plan for those first hiking trips when the icy weather finally recedes and those little buds start to pop out, foretelling the ‘sneezy’ season to come…but that’s for a later article.
I must admit, the older I get (and the mid 40’s are now solidly ‘mine’) the less and less I ‘enjoy’ sleeping on the hard ground. Thankfully, just in time for my ‘middle years,’ along comes the Hammock Craze in camping, hiking and just ‘hanging out’…literally. “Hammocking” is currently sweeping college campuses nationwide and on almost every overnight trail you can hike, the lightweight, parachute nylon hammock craze is easily one of the best outdoor trends since rubbing two sticks together to make fire! Made of flexible (read: stretchy) parachute nylon fabric in almost every color you can imagine, these hammocks are changing the way both weekend and long-term hikers ‘hit the trail’ with their weight and space-saving features and a level of comfort that tents only dream about (no pun intended).
My personal favorite hammock is produced by GRAND TRUNK out of Illinois and is called the “Skeeter Beeter Pro.” Grand Trunk (formerly “Travel Hammock, Inc”) makes a wide array of hammocks and accessories including its patented hammock sleeping bag that puts you in a cocoon of cozy comfort (say that 5 times fast) and keeps adding to the product line every season. The reason I love the Skeeter Beeter is because it’s an all-season hammock with a full mosquito netting feature that’s just right for us southern hikers who hear tell of bugs big as vultures and just plain like those bears to have a least a LITTLE challenge getting to their midnight snack. Okay, okay, its really about the comfort of the double-sized “Pro” Hammock and the fact that the netting can be un-zipped and the hammock used as an open-top (read: hiker on the half-shell) luxury lounge. Add a lightweight sleeping pad for a little extra warmth, a silk-sleep sack weighing only ounces for more ‘snuggle’ factor and you have in my opinion, the ONLY WAY TO CAMP.
So next time Spring Fever grabs you by the collar and screams “You gotta hit the trail, paleface!”…think HAMMOCKS..and come see the full line of GRAND TRUNK Hammocks & Accessories at Smoky Mountain Trader. We’re right on the downtown square in Cleveland, GA. Now Gear Up & get Out There !
